The Best Time to Visit Anna Maria Island

The thing to know first: high season here is winter. February and March are the busiest and priciest months on this island, and September is the quietest warm one. That is the reverse of most beach destinations and it changes how you plan.

The short answer

Best all round

April. The winter crowd has gone, the water is warming, and the island feels like itself again.

Best value

September. Warm water, empty beaches, low rates, and the peak of storm season. Know your evacuation plan and it is a good bet.

Best weather

November, or February if you do not mind company. Dry, mild, and made for being outside all day.

Hardest to park

March, by a distance. Use the free trolley or the bikes from the house and the month stops being a problem.

Month by month

January

Snowbird season in full swing. Mild, not hot.

  • Mild enough for long days outside, cool enough that few people swim.
  • The island is busy with long-stay winter visitors rather than families.
  • Manatees move into warm-water refuges inland, which is worth a trip.

February

Peak winter season, and the nicest weather of the year for being outdoors.

  • The Cortez Commercial Fishing Festival is a long-running fixture, usually the third weekend of the month.
  • Booked up well ahead. This is high season here, not summer.
  • Stone crab is in season until May 1.

March

Busiest month of the year on the island.

  • Spring break plus snowbirds still in residence. Parking is at its worst.
  • Water starts to become swimmable toward the end.
  • The free trolley is genuinely the best way to move this month.

April

The winter crowd leaves and the weather is perfect.

  • Warm, dry, and much quieter after the first week or two.
  • Water is comfortable by late in the month.
  • Turtle nesting season begins on island beaches.

May

Warm, quiet and underrated.

  • Turtle nesting under way. Clear the beach overnight, every night.
  • Stone crab season closes May 1.
  • Afternoon storms start to appear late in the month.

June

Hot, humid, and the family season begins.

  • Hurricane season opens June 1, which matters more here than on most coasts.
  • The bay side is the answer with small children as the Gulf warms up.
  • Afternoon storms are the daily pattern.

July

Hot and busy, with the island's summer family crowd.

  • Independence Day is the busiest week of the summer.
  • Water is bath-warm on both sides of the island.
  • Go early; the beach lots fill by mid-morning.

August

The hottest, wettest month, and quieter than July.

  • Rates drop noticeably. So do crowds.
  • The busiest part of hurricane season begins.
  • Shade at Coquina Beach is worth planning the day around.

September

Very quiet, very warm, and the peak of storm season.

  • The emptiest the island gets in warm weather.
  • Check the hurricane forecast and know your evacuation plan before you travel.
  • Red tide conditions vary; check the day you go.

October

The weather turns lovely and the crowds have not returned.

  • Stone crab season opens October 15.
  • Hurricane season is still running until November 30.
  • Water stays warm well into the month.

November

Dry, mild and beautiful. The season begins to turn.

  • Hurricane season ends November 30.
  • Snowbirds start arriving toward the end of the month.
  • Thanksgiving week is busy; the rest is not.

December

Mild, festive, and filling up.

  • Winter residents arrive in numbers.
  • Christmas and New Year book out early.
  • Cool enough for long walks, warm enough to sit outside.

True all year, on every coast we serve

  • Sea turtle nesting season runs from roughly May through October on Florida beaches. Clear the sand overnight, fill in holes, and keep lights off the beach after dark.
  • Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, busiest mid-August through October.
  • Florida's stone crab season opens on October 15 and closes on May 1.
  • Summer afternoons run to short heavy thunderstorms rather than all-day rain. Lightning closes a beach immediately.

Common questions

What is the best month to visit Anna Maria Island?

April and November are the two sweet spots. Both sit between the winter crowd and the summer heat, with warm dry weather and far easier parking. April has the warmer water of the two; November has the emptier island.

When is high season on Anna Maria Island?

Winter, which surprises people. February and March are the busiest and most expensive months, because long-stay winter visitors overlap with spring break. Summer is hot and busy with families but is not the peak, and September is the quietest warm month of the year.

When is the water warm enough to swim at Anna Maria Island?

Comfortable from roughly late April through October, and bath-warm from June to September. The bay side on the east of the island warms earlier and stays calmer than the Gulf side, which is the useful thing to know with small children.

When is Anna Maria Island least crowded?

September, comfortably. It is warm, quiet and cheap, and it is also the peak of hurricane season, which on a low barrier island is a trade worth understanding before you book. Late April and early May are the quieter option without that consideration.

What should we check before booking in hurricane season?

Your evacuation zone, your cancellation terms and your travel insurance. Anna Maria Island is low and reached by two bridges that close in high winds, so the island evacuates early and completely. Knowing that in advance is the whole of the preparation.

The bikes, cart, and beach gear are already part of your stay. They are at the house when you walk in, so there is nothing to pick up and nothing to carry home. Amenio works only with partner vacation homes on Florida's Emerald Coast, Suncoast, and First Coast, so if your house is one of ours, the gear is already there.
