Destin and 30A
Roughly forty miles of coast, two very different personalities, and the whitest sand in Florida. Destin has the harbor, the highway and the convenience. 30A has the bike trail, the dune lakes and the towns people photograph. Here is everything we know about both.
Getting your bearings
The geography is simple once you see it. US Highway 98 is the fast road, running east from Destin through Miramar Beach. South of it, from Dune Allen to Inlet Beach, Scenic Highway 30A loops down along the water through a dozen small beach towns before rejoining 98 at the eastern end. Panama City Beach continues further east again.
That split decides how you get around. 30A and the neighborhood streets off it are posted low enough for a street-legal cart and are paralleled the whole way by the Timpoochee Trail, so bikes work for almost everything. Highway 98 is not cart territory and never will be, so anything in Destin proper, at Henderson Beach or further afield is a car trip.
The other thing worth knowing before you arrive: parking is the binding constraint on 30A from spring through summer, not crowds on the sand. The beach accesses have small lots and they fill by mid-morning. Almost every piece of advice in the guides below eventually comes back to that.

What is the difference between Destin and 30A?
Destin is a working fishing town turned resort city on US Highway 98, with the harbor, the big public beaches and most of the shopping. 30A is the two-lane scenic road east of it, running about nineteen miles past a string of small planned and old beach towns: Dune Allen, Blue Mountain Beach, Grayton Beach, WaterColor, Seaside, Seagrove, WaterSound, Alys Beach, Rosemary Beach and Inlet Beach. Destin is busier and more convenient. 30A is quieter, prettier and harder to park in.
Do you need a car on 30A?
For getting to the area, yes. Once you are there, much less than you would expect. The Timpoochee Trail runs the length of 30A so bikes reach nearly everything, and a street-legal cart covers the same ground on the road. What needs a car is anything that requires US Highway 98, because a low-speed vehicle may not travel on it.
When is the best time to visit Destin and 30A?
Late spring and early autumn are the sweet spots: warm water, fewer people than midsummer, and parking you can actually find. Summer is hottest and busiest. Autumn stays warm well past when most visitors assume it does.
What is a coastal dune lake?
A freshwater lake sitting directly behind the dune line that periodically cuts through to the Gulf, mixing fresh and salt water. They exist in only a handful of places on earth, and South Walton has around fifteen of them along 30A. Grayton Beach, Deer Lake and Camp Helen are all built around one.
Is the equipment already at our vacation rental?
At an Amenio partner home, yes. Bikes, a six-seat street-legal cart and beach gear are at the house before you arrive. The cart unlocks once the driver, who must be 21 or older, uploads a driver's license and current auto insurance and signs the low-speed vehicle walkthrough.
Staying at an Amenio partner home?
The bikes, cart, and beach gear are already part of your stay. They are at the house when you walk in, so there is nothing to pick up and nothing to carry home.
