The Best Time to Visit Jacksonville's Beaches

Northeast Florida has four seasons in a way the rest of the state does not. It gets properly cold in January and properly hot in July, and the Atlantic takes its time catching up with the air in spring. Here is what each month is actually like.

The short answer

Best all round

October. Warm, dry, swimmable, and the humidity has finally gone.

Best value

September weekdays. Warm water, empty sand, and the rates of the shoulder season.

Best for riding and walking

March and April. Cool enough for miles of hard sand and oak-lined road, before the heat sets in.

Coldest water

February. The beach is magnificent and almost nobody is on it, but nobody is swimming either.

Month by month

January

The coldest month, and the beach is spectacular and empty.

  • Too cold to swim for nearly everyone. Walking and riding the hard sand are the draw.
  • North Atlantic right whales calve off this coast in winter, and sightings from shore do happen.
  • Layers. It gets properly cold here compared with south Florida.

February

Cold, clear and quiet.

  • Excellent month for the parks: no bugs, no crowds, no heat.
  • Right whale season continues.
  • Stone crab is in season until May 1.

March

Spring arrives and the beaches start to fill at weekends.

  • Air warms quickly; the Atlantic lags well behind it.
  • Spring break brings weekend crowds rather than the constant crush.
  • One of the best months for Ponte Vedra Boulevard and the trails.

April

Warm, dry and genuinely lovely.

  • Air is warm, water is still cool for most people.
  • Turtle nesting season begins toward the end of the month.
  • The best month of the year for a long ride.

May

Early summer, water finally warming.

  • Turtle nesting under way; clear the beach overnight.
  • Stone crab season closes May 1.
  • Weekends get busy; weekdays stay calm.

June

Summer proper, and hurricane season opens.

  • Hot and humid with afternoon storms.
  • Water is comfortable. Rip currents are the thing to respect.
  • Hanna Park's lake is the calm-water answer with small children.

July

Hottest and busiest.

  • Independence Day is the peak.
  • Low tide in the early morning is the best beach of the day.
  • Lightning closes the beach quickly and often.

August

Hot, humid, and quieter as schools return.

  • Crowds thin markedly late in the month.
  • The busiest part of hurricane season begins.
  • Warmest water of the year.

September

Warm, quiet and the peak of storm season.

  • Lovely weather between systems, and empty beaches.
  • Check the forecast and know your evacuation zone before travelling.
  • Swell from distant storms makes for strong surf and rip currents.

October

Many locals' favourite month.

  • Warm, dry, comfortable, and the humidity finally lifts.
  • Stone crab season opens October 15.
  • Hurricane season runs to November 30.

November

Cool and clear, with the beaches to yourself.

  • Hurricane season ends November 30.
  • Right whale season begins off this coast.
  • Thanksgiving week is the one busy stretch.

December

Cold, bright and very quiet.

  • Swimming is over; the beach walk is at its best.
  • Holidays fill houses for two weeks and empty them either side.
  • Fort Clinch and the Talbot islands are excellent in cold clear weather.

True all year, on every coast we serve

  • Sea turtle nesting season runs from roughly May through October on Florida beaches. Clear the sand overnight, fill in holes, and keep lights off the beach after dark.
  • Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, busiest mid-August through October.
  • Florida's stone crab season opens on October 15 and closes on May 1.
  • Summer afternoons run to short heavy thunderstorms rather than all-day rain. Lightning closes a beach immediately.

Common questions

What is the best month to visit Jacksonville Beach?

October, for most people: warm, dry, comfortable, and the humidity has finally lifted while the water is still swimmable. April and May are the spring equivalent, with lovely air but an Atlantic that is still catching up.

When is the water warm enough to swim at Jacksonville Beach?

Roughly June through October, warmest in August. The Atlantic here runs cooler than Florida's Gulf beaches and lags the air temperature by weeks, so a hot April day can still come with cold water. Hanna Park's freshwater lake warms earlier.

When are the Jacksonville beaches least crowded?

January and February, when it is genuinely cold and the beach is enormous and empty. For quiet with usable weather, weekdays in September and the first half of December are the local answer. These beaches are much busier at weekends than midweek all year round.

Can you see whales at Jacksonville Beach?

In winter, occasionally. North Atlantic right whales calve off the northeast Florida coast in the colder months, and sightings from the shore do happen between roughly November and April. It is a matter of luck rather than a scheduled attraction, and they are an endangered species, so keep well clear on the water.

Is hurricane season a problem here?

Less than on Florida's Gulf beaches, though it is real. Storms in the Atlantic more often track north along this coast than come straight in, which usually means dangerous surf, closed beaches and cancelled flights rather than damage. Know your evacuation zone and read your travel insurance before booking between June and November.

Staying at an Amenio partner home?

The bikes, cart, and beach gear are already part of your stay. They are at the house when you walk in, so there is nothing to pick up and nothing to carry home. Amenio works only with partner vacation homes on Florida's Emerald Coast, Suncoast, and First Coast, so if your house is one of ours, the gear is already there.

Want to see what is at the house? See the bikes, or find your reservation. Questions about equipment at your home? Call or text 850-231-8000.
