Rainy Day Things to Do on Anna Maria Island
Here is the thing nobody tells you: Anna Maria Island has almost nothing indoors. It is seven miles of beach town and that is the whole appeal. So a rainy-day plan here is really a plan for crossing a bridge, and fortunately the bridges lead somewhere good.
First, work out which kind of wet day it is
- The afternoon storm. The normal summer pattern: heat builds, a hard storm arrives mid-afternoon, and it moves through. Do not write off the day. Take the beach in the morning and keep something in reserve for around three.
- The grey frontal day. Wind, steady rain, no clearing. This is when the drive over the bridge is worth it, and when you should commit to one place rather than trying to do three.
Whichever it is, lightning ends a beach day at once. Out of the water, off the sand, and about half an hour after the last thunder before going back.
Where to go
The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature
Bradenton, about twenty minutes from the island
The closest real answer and the best one. A natural and cultural history museum with a planetarium and the Parker Manatee Rehabilitation Habitat, where injured and orphaned manatees are cared for before being returned to the wild. Manatee presentations run several times a day and are the thing children remember.
Worth knowing: Closed Mondays, and the presentation times are fixed. Check the schedule and time your arrival around one.
The Ringling
Sarasota, about forty-five minutes
A state art museum on a bayfront estate: galleries of European and Asian art, the Ca' d'Zan mansion, and a circus museum with a model of a full travelling circus laid out at miniature scale. Large enough that a group can split up and reconvene, and much of it is under cover.
Worth knowing: The grounds are lovely and entirely outdoors, so a wet day is a museum day here rather than a whole-estate day.
Mote Science Education Aquarium
Nathan Benderson Park, Sarasota, about forty minutes
The new home of Mote's public aquarium, opened after the old City Island facility closed. A large modern building of marine exhibits and teaching spaces, entirely indoors, which is exactly what you want on a wet day.
Worth knowing: This is a new address. Any guide or map still pointing at City Island is out of date.
ArtCenter Manatee
Bradenton, about twenty minutes
A community art center with changing galleries and a studio program. Free or low cost, quiet, and an easy hour that pairs naturally with the Bishop Museum a short distance away.
Worth knowing: Small. Best as the second stop of a Bradenton morning rather than the reason for the drive.
The island's own historical museum
City of Anna Maria
The Anna Maria Island Historical Society keeps a small museum near Pine Avenue covering the island's history, with an old jail and a cottage on the site. It is genuinely small, but it is on the island, it is free to walk into, and it fills a gap in a shower.
Worth knowing: Limited hours. Check before making the trip in the rain.
If you are a group of ten or more
- The Ringling is the one built for numbers: a large campus with several buildings, so people can move at different speeds and meet for lunch.
- The Bishop Museum handles a group well if you arrive shortly before a manatee presentation, which gives everyone a shared thing to be at.
- Remember the bridges. A cart cannot leave the island, so a mainland outing is a car outing, and thirteen people is two or three cars and a parking plan.
- Split the group rather than moving it. Two adults take the older children to a museum, two stay back with the small ones, and swap tomorrow.
Staying on the island
There is a decent rainy day to be had without crossing anything, if you adjust what you are expecting from it.
- Ride the free trolley from one end of the island to the other and back. It costs nothing, it takes about forty minutes each way, it is dry, and small children treat it as an event.
- Bridge Street and Pine Avenue both work in a shower: short blocks, shops close together, and somewhere to sit when it comes down hard.
- Take the gaps. Between storms the island empties, and a ride down the shaded path from Cortez Beach to Coquina Beach after rain is better than the same ride in full sun.
- The bay side is calmer than the Gulf in weather, so if the surf has gone rough, the water at the north end bayfront often has not.
- Shell sorting on a covered porch. Unreasonably effective.
Check before you drive
This stretch of coast has changed more than the articles about it have. The aquarium moved, the island's piers came down in the 2024 storms and are still being rebuilt, and opening days vary by season at the smaller places. Look up the venue's own page the morning you go rather than trusting a list, this one included.
Common questions
What is there to do on Anna Maria Island when it rains?
On the island itself, very little: it is a beach island with two small business districts and almost nothing under a roof. The realistic answer is a short drive over the bridge. The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature in Bradenton, with a planetarium and a manatee rehabilitation habitat, is about twenty minutes away and is the best single option.
Where is the Mote aquarium now?
At Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, near University Town Center. The long-running City Island aquarium closed in 2025 and the new Mote Science Education Aquarium opened in its place, so check the address rather than following an older guide to City Island.
What can a large group do indoors near Anna Maria Island?
The Ringling in Sarasota is the one built for numbers: an art museum, a historic bayfront mansion and a circus museum on one large campus, so a group of a dozen can move at different speeds. The Bishop Museum in Bradenton is the closer option and handles a group well if you arrive around a manatee presentation.
Does it rain a lot on Anna Maria Island?
Summer here runs to short, heavy afternoon storms rather than all-day rain. They build in the heat, pass through, and often leave the evening clear. Plan the beach for the morning and keep an indoor idea for mid-afternoon, and you will usually lose an hour or two rather than a day.
What can we do at the house on a wet day?
Ride the free trolley end to end, which costs nothing, takes about forty minutes each way and is a perfectly good outing in the rain with small children. Otherwise the cart makes short hops to Bridge Street or Pine Avenue easy without a wet walk from a far parking space.
Staying at an Amenio partner home?
The bikes, cart, and beach gear are already part of your stay. They are at the house when you walk in, so there is nothing to pick up and nothing to carry home. Amenio works only with partner vacation homes on Florida's Emerald Coast, Suncoast, and First Coast, so if your house is one of ours, the gear is already there.
