Unique Things to Do on 30A and in Destin
Everybody finds the beach. These are the five things people who live here bring up when a visitor asks what else there is, and four of the five cost nothing.
1. Walk out to a coastal dune lake
This is the genuinely rare one. A coastal dune lake is a freshwater lake sitting directly behind the dune, close enough to the Gulf that it periodically breaks through and drains into it, then closes again and refills. The mix of fresh and salt makes a habitat that exists in only a handful of places on earth, and South Walton has around fifteen of them strung along a nineteen-mile road.
The thing to see is an outfall: the shallow channel where the lake cuts across the beach to the Gulf. It appears and disappears with rain and storms, and when it is running it makes a warm knee-deep creek across the sand that children will not leave for hours.
- Western Lake at Grayton Beach State Park, the classic one, with a paddle launch and trails.
- Eastern Lake at Seagrove, visible right from the Timpoochee Trail.
- Deer Lake State Park, where a boardwalk over tall dunes drops you beside it.
- Lake Powell at Camp Helen State Park, the largest of them, at the eastern end.
2. Airstream Row and the Saturday market in Seaside
A line of vintage Airstream trailers parked permanently along the edge of Seaside's town center, each one a kitchen. It is the most photographed food in the Panhandle and the easiest lunch on 30A, eaten on a lawn with your feet in the grass.
Saturday morning, the amphitheater beside it becomes a producers' farmers market: growers, bakers and food makers rather than craft stalls. Go early, go on foot or by bike, and accept that parking a car in Seaside on a Saturday is a losing game.
3. Spend an afternoon being confused by Grayton Beach
Grayton is the oldest town on this coast and it has stayed determinedly unimproved while everything around it got planned. Sand streets, weathered cottages, dogs everywhere, and a sign that has been telling visitors for years that the place is home to nice dogs and strange people. It is a joke the town means.
The Red Bar, the town's long-running restaurant and music room, burned to the ground in 2019 and was rebuilt in the same spot to look exactly as it had before, down to a piece of the original floor saved from the fire. It reopened in 2020. That decision tells you most of what you need to know about Grayton.
4. Look at the white walls in Alys Beach
At the eastern end of 30A, an entire town built in white masonry: courtyard houses, arched passages, walled gardens, and streets that read more like Bermuda or North Africa than the Florida Panhandle. On a bright afternoon the glare off it is almost too much, which is exactly why people photograph it at the end of the day.
It is a residential community, not an attraction. Walk the public streets and the town center, park where visitor parking is signed, and remember that the courtyard you are framing belongs to somebody.
5. Go down to the Destin harbor boardwalk in the evening
Destin is a working fishing harbor before it is anything else, and the boardwalk along it is where that is most obvious. Charter boats come in through the late afternoon and clean their catch at the docks, pelicans and herons stand around waiting for the offcuts with complete confidence, and the pass out to the Gulf runs green and fast beside it all.
It is the busiest and most commercial thing on this list, and it is still worth an evening. Go for the boats coming in rather than for anything else.
And one more: ride the trail at sunset
The Timpoochee Trail through Seacrest and Seagrove in the last hour of daylight is the thing most people end up describing when they get home. The light comes low across the dune lakes, the road empties, the heat finally lets go, and you can ride for an hour without deciding to. Take lights, because it gets dark faster than you expect, and take your time. More on riding it in the 30A biking guide.
Common questions
What is a coastal dune lake and where can I see one on 30A?
A freshwater lake sitting right behind the dune line that periodically cuts through to the Gulf, mixing fresh and salt water. They exist in only a handful of places on earth and South Walton has around fifteen of them. Western Lake at Grayton Beach State Park, Deer Lake, Eastern Lake at Seagrove and Camp Helen's Lake Powell are the easiest to see.
What day is the Seaside farmers market?
Saturday morning, in the Seaside amphitheater. It is a producers' market, so it is food, produce and bakers rather than crafts. Airstream Row is right beside it if somebody wants breakfast instead of vegetables.
What is the best sunset spot on 30A?
Any west-facing beach access will do the job, but the better answer is to be moving. The Timpoochee Trail through Seacrest and Seagrove in the last hour of light, with the dune lakes catching the color on one side, is the ride people remember from the week.
Is Alys Beach open to visitors?
Yes. It is a private community but the streets and the town center are walkable, and people come specifically to see the white architecture. Park where visitor parking is marked, walk the courtyards, and keep in mind that most of what you are photographing is somebody's house.
What is there to do on 30A when we are not at the beach?
The short list locals actually give: walk out to a coastal dune lake outfall, spend a morning at the Saturday market in Seaside, poke around Grayton Beach, look at the white walls in Alys Beach, and spend an evening on the Destin harbor boardwalk watching the boats come in.
Staying at an Amenio partner home?
The bikes, cart, and beach gear are already part of your stay. They are at the house when you walk in, so there is nothing to pick up and nothing to carry home. Amenio works only with partner vacation homes on Florida's Emerald Coast, Suncoast, and First Coast, so if your house is one of ours, the gear is already there.
Want to see what is at the house? See the bikes, or find your reservation. Questions about equipment at your home? Call or text 850-231-8000.
