Where to Eat With Kids at Jacksonville's Beaches

These are working towns rather than a resort strip, and it shows at dinner time. Waits are shorter than on Florida's more famous beach roads, the places are more ordinary in the best sense, and one walkable block solves most of the week.

Start with the block, not the restaurant

The single most useful thing to know here is that Beaches Town Center exists. Where Atlantic Boulevard ends at the ocean, Neptune Beach and Atlantic Beach meet across a couple of blocks of restaurants and shops, with a beach access at the end.

That changes the arithmetic of dinner with children. You are not committing to one restaurant and its wait: you put your name down, walk to the sand, let everyone run for fifteen minutes, and come back. On a coast where the usual advice is "book ahead or eat at five", having somewhere to be during the wait is worth more than a reservation.

The places to know

Deliberately short, and deliberately weighted to places that have been here a long time. A list of the newest openings dates faster than anyone updates it, and these beaches have lost a couple of long-standing names recently.

Beaches Town Center

The Neptune Beach and Atlantic Beach line

Two blocks where Atlantic Boulevard runs out at the ocean, straddling two cities, with restaurants, bars and shops close enough together that you can put your name in at one and wait at another. There is a beach access at the end of it, which is the feature that makes it work with children.

Worth knowing: Almost nobody drives here. It is a walking and cycling district by habit, and parking is the tightest on the north beaches.

Singleton's Seafood Shack

Mayport, about fifteen minutes north

On the water in the fishing village since 1969, with boats tied up outside and the day's catch coming off them. Plain rooms, paper on the tables, and the whole point is that it is the real thing rather than a themed version of it.

Worth knowing: Pair it with the shrimp boats and the St. Johns River ferry and you have an afternoon rather than just a meal.

Angie's Subs

Jacksonville Beach, with a second location in Atlantic Beach

A beaches sandwich shop that has been feeding this town for decades, and the easiest possible lunch with children: order, wait a few minutes, take it to the sand. The Atlantic Beach location opened more recently.

Worth knowing: The best answer on this list for a beach picnic, and it scales to a large group without anyone needing a table.

The Jacksonville Beach oceanfront

Around the pier and the SeaWalk

The blocks behind the plaza have the highest concentration of casual food at this end of the coast, much of it with outdoor seating and a view of the water. Convenient rather than remarkable, which on the fourth night of a holiday is exactly what you want.

Worth knowing: Busiest parking on the coast. Arrive on a bike or in a cart and the whole evening improves.

Ponte Vedra, for a quieter evening

St. Johns County

South over the county line the pace drops noticeably. Fewer options, more space, and a better bet on a Saturday night in July when the beach towns are full.

Worth knowing: It is a drive rather than a walk from the Duval beaches, and most of it is not cart territory.

Feeding a group of ten or more

  • Beaches Town Center handles a group by splitting it: two tables in two places two doors apart, meeting on the beach afterwards. Much easier than one table of twelve.
  • A sandwich run and dinner on the sand genuinely works here, because the beach is wide, firm and walkable rather than a hot slog through soft sand.
  • Mayport for lunch rather than dinner with a big group. It is casual, it is outdoors, and there is a working dock to look at while you wait.
  • Call in the morning for that evening if you want a real table for twelve. Take the early slot.
  • Cook at the house at least twice. Arrival day especially, when every rental in town changes over at once.

Dinner on the beach, which this coast is built for

The wide, hard-packed sand that makes these beaches good for strollers and bikes also makes them the easiest beaches to carry a picnic onto. At low tide in the evening the beach is enormous, the crowds have gone, and the light is good.

  • Take the backpack chairs and the umbrella from the house, and use a wagon or a bike if you have a distance to cover.
  • Check the tide. Low tide doubles the usable beach and firms the walk from the access.
  • The evening breeze off the Atlantic is steadier than on Florida's Gulf beaches, so plant the umbrella deep and angle it into the wind.
  • Take everything home, fill in the holes, and keep clear of marked nesting areas in season.
  • Lightning ends the picnic immediately. Off the sand, and about half an hour after the last thunder before returning.

Small practical things

  • Casual is the default across all three beach towns. Sandy feet are not a problem at most places.
  • Ask about a high chair when you put your name down rather than when you sit.
  • Weekends in summer are busier than weekdays by a wide margin, and Sunday evening is the worst slot of the week.
  • Jacksonville proper, twenty-five minutes inland, has far more range if you want a specific cuisine. At the beaches the offer is seafood, burgers and casual, done well.

Common questions

Where is the best place to eat with kids near Jacksonville Beach?

Beaches Town Center, the walkable block where Atlantic Boulevard meets the ocean on the Neptune Beach and Atlantic Beach line. It solves most dinners because it is a cluster rather than a single restaurant: you put your name down somewhere, walk two minutes to the beach access, and come back when the table is ready.

Do you need reservations at the Jacksonville beaches?

Less than at most Florida beach towns, which is one of the quiet advantages of these being real towns rather than a resort strip. Weekend evenings in summer still fill up, and the popular places in Beaches Town Center will have a wait, but it is rarely the ninety minutes you would face on 30A in July.

Where do you get fresh seafood near Jacksonville Beach?

Mayport, at the mouth of the St. Johns River, where the shrimp boats actually work. Singleton's Seafood Shack has been there since 1969 and still has fishermen unloading at the dock. It is about fifteen minutes north of Atlantic Beach and it is the most genuine seafood meal on this coast.

How do you feed a large group at the beaches?

Beaches Town Center again: a group of twelve splits naturally across a couple of places in the same two blocks and meets on the beach afterwards. The other approach is a sandwich run and dinner on the sand, which works better here than almost anywhere because the beach is wide, firm and walkable.

Is Ragtime Tavern in Atlantic Beach still open?

No. It closed permanently after nearly forty-two years. It still appears on most published lists for these beaches, so it is worth knowing before you build an evening around it.

Staying at an Amenio partner home?

The bikes, cart, and beach gear are already part of your stay. They are at the house when you walk in, so there is nothing to pick up and nothing to carry home. Amenio works only with partner vacation homes on Florida's Emerald Coast, Suncoast, and First Coast, so if your house is one of ours, the gear is already there.

Want to see what is at the house? See the bikes, or find your reservation. Questions about equipment at your home? Call or text 850-231-8000.
